Barbara Blair Randall, executive director of the Fashion Center, informed W&H of the award, noting that "Projects like yours are helping to improve the economic vitality of the Fashion District for all who live, work and do business here." (For more information about the Fashion Center, please see the Herald Square article.) plans were being developed for the lobby renovation, ownership discovered the dramatic original ceiling, featuring a barrel vault of plaster coffered panels with decorative rosettes and moldings, hidden five feet above mundane flat sheet rock that had been installed in the 1970s. Consequently, what was once the crowning glory of a grand lobby has been duplicated with fiberglass-reinforced plaster castings, which are visually indistinguishable from the soaring original ceiling in the classic style of the 1920s. In addition to the restored ceiling, the new lobby features marble floors and walls, and an arched entrance with an exterior bronze canopy. Congratulations to the hard-working team of W&H and Newmark Knight Frank representatives, who helped bring this ambitious effort to a highly successful conclusion. |
